Originating in the Ordivician, Megalograptus is a eurypterid, or "sea scorpion", part of a diverse group of aquatic arthropods. Megalograptus is a relatively early member of the group, notable for its fearsome claws and stinger-like tail. Growing to well over a meter in length, it is a capable predator, using the sharp spines on its limbs to sift through sand for small animals and shred larger prey into pieces. Like most other eurypterids, it is a capable swimmer, propelling itself surprisingly quickly using its winglike fins.
